This dog lamp is a show-stopper: kids build a character piece that actually works and looks amazing on a bedside table. The best moment is when the “dog” stands confidently and the lamp lights up—made by their own hands.

This is a premium, fundamentals-building workshop using hand tools only. Students work with solid wood (light-grain softwood) in small groups (max 6) with instructor-led, step-by-step guidance. Across two sessions, they develop confidence through accurate layout, clean drilling, careful fitting, and disciplined finishing—building safe habits and real craftsmanship.

What You’ll Learn

  • Measuring and marking: reference edges, symmetry, and consistent part sizing
  • Hand-sawing and trimming: refining pieces for clean, straight edges (no machines)
  • Hand drilling: accurate bolt holes for movable joints and controlled alignment (no machines)
  • Shaping: rounding edges and smoothing curves for a “finished” furniture feel
  • Assembly: using bolts/washers neatly, tightening for movement vs. stability, and stance balancing
  • Finishing: progressive sanding and a kid-safe finish for a smooth, durable result
  • Safety workflow: controlled tool handling and tidy, organized bench habits
