A workshop first. Everything else grew from the bench.

Life in the UAE is comfortable in a way few places are. Almost anything practical can be handed to someone else for a small fee. That is easy, and over time it changes us. The baseline of doing things with our own hands drops so low that even changing a light bulb starts to feel like a job for someone else.

I saw it in myself. I discovered woodworking young and had been making things for as long as I can remember. Then I moved to Dubai in 2013, and building regularly got harder. The habit faded. It took the pandemic to bring it back. With the world slowed down, I came back to the bench and realised how much I had missed the feeling of making something real.

Around that time I spent ten months in Scotland, studying furniture design, making, and restoration. I wanted whatever I built next to rest on proper training, not just my own enthusiasm.

That is when The Makers Society started. Not as a shop or a school at first, but as an idea: give people in Dubai a place to slow down and make something with their hands, and build a community around learning the craft properly. A bench, a good set of tools, someone to show you how.

The longer I spent teaching, the clearer it became that the woodworking was never really the point. It is the way in. What people actually walk out with is the quiet confidence that they can achieve something on their own, without depending on anyone else. Most of what happens here is not people learning to cut dovetails. It is the look on someone's face when they realise they can make something real.

There is an easy way to run a workshop. You rent the bench, take the fee, and everyone goes home. I decided early that we would not work that way. A business built only on transactions loses the thing that matters most. So we built for community instead. Our residents, and the younger makers in our Kids Academy, come in not just to learn a skill but to find somewhere they belong.

There is a stereotype I have always wanted to rewrite: that in this part of the world you do not find quality and care. Every piece that leaves our benches is an answer to that, whether it is a student's first cutting board or a batch of bespoke boxes for a company that trusted us with their name. We use the tools we sell, we teach with them, and we stock only what we would reach for ourselves.

I think this matters more each year, not less. As the digital world gets louder and AI moves faster, people will want to touch something real and build with their own hands. Craft will not be a nostalgic hobby. It will be an anchor. We are building that foundation now, slowly and properly, so it lasts. When one of our Kids Academy students walks back through these doors twenty years from now, I want them to feel they were part of what this became.

The woodworking is just where it starts.
